Garner chose Gary Winick as the director of her film. They continued searching for projects until Winick's death in 2011. Garner became an ambassador of Save the Children U.S.A. in 2009. Alongside the promotion of early education, literacy and nutrition on a national level, Garner's role also includes promotion of the literacy of all Americans. Garner was elected to the board of directors of the non-profit in 2014. Garner advocates for early child development.
